Work has begun on a new recreation building
In October of 2015, the Park District was notified that our grant application for expansion of the Chalet was successful and we would be receiving a grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for $2,363,800. This was exciting news as the need for additional program space was high on our priority list. In January of 2016, we were notified that all grants were suspended due to the State’s financial challenges. At that time the Park District decided to hold off on the project. With continued space constraints, we have been working with other agencies to hold programs at their locations or have used some of our spaces that may have been less than ideal for the activity. In August of 2016 we were notified the grants have been reinstated and we are moving ahead with the Chalet project. We broke ground in April of 2017 with an opening planned for late spring/early summer 2018. The scope of the project includes the demolition of the current building and tennis courts. The new building will be constructed in roughly the same area and will include a gymnasium, activity room, dance studio, fitness studio and instructional kitchen. Two new tennis courts will be built once the building is complete. The District’s current debt will be retired in 2017 and new bonds were issued to keep the tax rate level. This means the residents of Mundelein will be able to enjoy this new, 12,000 square foot facility without an increase in their property tax rate. Expenses to operate the building will be paid for by revenue generated through activities held at the new building. We are striving to offer quality programs and facilities while remaining sensitive to the burden of property taxes we all experience. If you have questions please call 847.566.0650.
