August 1, 2023–The Lake County Health Department has given us the go-ahead to reopen Diamond Lake Beach after last week’s algae bloom! The beach will be opening today (August 1) at 12:30 pm.
July 29, 2023–Mundelein Park & Recreation District has closed Diamond Lake Beach through Sunday, July 31 out of an abundance of caution due to potential active blue-green algae bloom. On Monday, August 1, the Lake County Health Department will assess conditions to see if we can open.
Earlier today, the Department of Public Health urged caution and the District decided to close the beach. Although the algae occur naturally, in high concentrations it can have health effects on people and pets.
It is recommended that lake users avoid contact with water that:
• Looks like spilled, green, or blue-green paint
• Has surface scums, mats, or films;
• Has a blue or green crust at the shoreline;
• Is discolored or has green-colored streaks or
• Has greenish globs suspended in the water below the surface.
When in doubt stay out!
“Because public safety is our top priority, it is important to test Diamond Lake Beach. Lake County Health Department is scheduled to come out for our monthly testing on Monday, August 1 and will add the blue green algae test to our normal panel of testing. They are unable to come out before Monday as they do not conduct testing on Friday and weekends. As well, we have checked with third-party testing companies and they are unable to test until Monday. Therefore, we have made the decision to close the beach over the weekend. Please check the Rainout Line on Monday for updates.” said Ron Salski, Executive Director, Mundelein Park & Recreation District.
